The genuinely interesting and unresolved debate is vision-only versus sensor fusion. Tesla and Mobileye argue that since humans drive with two eyes and a brain, cameras plus AI can do it all, and adding radar/LiDAR is engineering debt. Tesla famously deleted radar from new cars in 2021 and ultrasonic sensors in 2022. Waymo, Cruise, Baidu Apollo, and most Chinese L4 stacks argue you need radar and LiDAR because cameras fail catastrophically in sun glare, heavy rain, and lighting transitions where the radar voxel just keeps reporting. As of mid-2026 the debate is empirically open: Tesla has scale on its side, Waymo has safety statistics on its side, and the Chinese players are quietly shipping the most diverse sensor stacks of all. This same debate is now restarting in humanoids, with Tesla Optimus following the Tesla vision-only doctrine and most other humanoid OEMs (Figure, Apptronik, 1X, Agility) keeping a sensor fusion stack closer to the Waymo model.
